What’s the difference between the 2021 RAM 1500 and the RAM 1500 Classic?
As you’re researching a new RAM 1500 pickup truck to buy, you might come across the RAM 1500 Classic as well. The difference between these two models might not be immediately obvious, but it’s not so complicated.
In 2019, when RAM redesigned the 1500 for more powerful towing and better fuel economy, they rebranded the previous-generation RAM 1500 as the 1500 Classic, continuing its production. So that’s where the RAM 1500 Classic comes from—but what are the differences between it and the new RAM 1500? Read on to find out!

RAM 1500: Raw Towing Power with a More Efficient Engine
When updating its classic full-size pickup truck for the modern day, RAM ramped up the towing capacity by almost 20%, from a maximum of 10,680 pounds in the RAM 1500 Classic to a massive maximum of 12,750 pounds in the new 1500. The payload’s been increased too, from 1,800 to 2,300 pounds. If you regularly tow tons of weight, the new RAM 1500 is the choice for you.
Even with the increased towing and payload capacities of the 2021 RAM 1500, advancing technology means its engine is more efficient than its predecessor. The new pickup comes with a 3.6L V6 with an eTorque mild-hybrid system that gets an EPA-estimated 20/25 mpg city/highway, while staying as powerful as the 1500 Classic. The Classic, meanwhile, only gets 17 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway.
The other main update for the new generation of RAM 1500 is its level of luxury inside the cab. It can be fitted with a number of quality-of-life improvements, including dual-zone automatic climate control, premium leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated seats, a premium Harman Kardon audio system, and more.

RAM 1500 Classic: A No-Frills Workhorse
The RAM 1500 Classic’s rugged, traditional look underlines its no-nonsense approach to long hauls and hard work. If you want a truck with a two-door crew cab and easier maneuverability on narrow city streets, the 1500 Classic is the choice for you—the new RAM 1500 doesn’t have a crew cab option available.
Another plus in the RAM 1500 Classic’s column is its lower price. Since it’s basically an un-updated model of the new RAM 1500, it starts at about a $4,400 cheaper MSRP for a still extremely capable truck.

If you find yourself regularly hauling the heaviest loads long distances, or if you need more modern amenities, the 2021 RAM 1500 might be more your style.
